A running coach gives instructions, an athlete struggles to reach the finish line of the Athens Marathon. The Authentic, and a reader searches for the traces of a lost magazine. Three voices meet on the road to the Panathenaic Stadium, and across forty-two chapters they inspire one another. Because the marathon is not only the distance from Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium, but above all the journey of that distance within ourselves.
Focus on your technique and on keeping your arms moving quickly. Run low and efficiently. Let every stride propel you forward. The toughest kilometers are the 16th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 25th, 26th, 28th, and 31st. Keep in mind that the 5-kilometer stretch from the 20th to the 25th kilometer is the most demanding section of the course in terms of total elevation gain, climbing 89 meters overall. Stay calm, even if your pace drops significantly. At the aid station at the end of the kilometer, take the opportunity to drink a few sips of water, even if it’s cold or raining. Have an energy gel as well, if you haven’t taken one in the last seven and a half kilometers.
“Whatever happens today, I’ll finish,” I tell myself as I move over to the right side of the road. A marathon is a continuous act of determination. You pit your will against your anxiety, against the fatigue that inevitably arrives, against a mind that isn’t always as steady as you’d like it to be. You defy the relentless passage of time, which moves forward without mercy; the pain that disrupts your rhythm; and the pace you’re trying so hard to find and hold. In the end, you even have to overcome the moment when you no longer have the strength to keep being determined.
